Web Site No Longer Under Construction

One of my goals at the beginning of the year was to update my web site. I’ve fooled with it a number of times over the years and sometimes I wonder if it is always necessary. This time, though, I think it was necessary and I hope to not make any major overhauls over the next few years. When I went from a more traditional portfolio site to something that highlighted my blog, the idea was to keep the front page looking new. The problem was that I had swung too far the other way…my portfolio had taken a back seat and it almost seemed like I wanted to hide it. This time, I tried to get the best of both worlds. While my blog is important for including new content, my illustration portfolio should be the reason people come to my site. The front page now prominently displays all of my portfolio pages plus widgets that show my latest blog post and Twitter feed. Also, I wanted to beef up my portfolio some. I included some more information about each illustration on the side of each image. Plus, I used a plugin that allows people to see a much larger image of each illustration. The images on my other site were way too small and the detailed images never did the illustrations justice. You can see an example here. I think it makes each illustration more dynamic.

With this complete, I need to make some changes to my Big Cartel store to reflect the new look. Other than that…its back to creating!

A New York Fantasy

Yes and yes, here is the final New York illustration. If you’d like to see a few detailed portions, click here. I’ve made many posts about the direction I took with this poster, but I feel like I need to do it once more. After doing posters for Chicago and Sydney, it was hard to ignore New York City. Yet, I wanted to give it my own spin. So, instead of just making it all about the landmarks and icons of New York, I wanted to pay homage to the birth of hip-hop and the 4 elements (DJing, MCing, breakdancing, and graffiti). Yes, I have the Statue of Liberty, but I also have DJ Kool Herc working the turntables during one of his famous house parties. And since the beginning of hip-hop took place during the 1970′s, I made sure to include many fashions during this era and pop culture references. (How many Saturday Night Live characters can you pick out?) I’m not sure what I want to exactly do with this illustration, but for now, I’m breathing a sigh of relief after completing another successful personal project.

New York Poster – DONE!

Done and done. Yes, the New York poster is complete. I’m going to let it sit over night and look at it again tomorrow…sometimes, I get last minute ideas or want to make last minute changes. I’m not expecting it, but it is late and I’m not ready to do all of my “promotion” yet. For now, check out the manhole cover I decided to use as my signature…the final touch.
