• Goodbye!

Posted on June 16th, 2010 joemills No comments

Above, you can see one of the Chicago history videos the students worked on in Social Studies. We did lots of work with the green screen, editing, and skits. Even though the final pieces did not have that Hollywood polish, I was very happy with the results. As a going away gift, the students got a memories CD or DVD. It includes pictures from the major events from the year and the two videos they worked on this year. If students were part of Thriller, they got pictures and a video of that event.

If students are going to be absent on Friday, they should have received their report card today. Report cards can also be picked up on Friday. If students have not returned library books or paid for a missing book, they can not receive their report card.

After 8 years of teaching, this was the first year where a large part of me was unhappy to see the end of the school year. It was hard to say goodbye today, since I will no longer be seeing them day in, day out. I had a very positive school year with your children, and I know I will only look back on this year with fond memories. I wish them all the success in the world, and I hope to hear from them in the future.

    Have a great summer!

  • Looking Toward the Summer

Tomorrow, students will be receiving a packet from the 6th grade teachers. It will include work for them to do during the summer. Also, I am going to tell all 5th grade students to take home Volume 2 of their Math Journal. Since we only got through Unit 7, there are many pages the students could work on over the summer.

Final reminders…students should bring in missing library books or they will not receive their report card. Please bring $5 for the picnic.

    Have a great evening!

  • End of the Year Reminders

Posted on June 14th, 2010 joemills No comments

Students need to bring $5 for the class picnic on Wednesday. Also, students need to bring in missing library books and reference books or they should be prepared to pay to replace them. We began the process of cleaning up today, so students should be prepared to bring home any supplies they want to keep.

    Have a great evening!

  • World Language Assembly

Posted on June 11th, 2010 joemills No comments

The World Language Assembly was today. Since this was my first year as a classroom teacher, it was a proud moment for me to see my students performing. I was happy to see results of their hard work.

Looking to next week, students need to remember the following:

    • $5 is needed for the picnic on Wednesday
    • Books for math and science need to be returned by Monday. If they are  not, students will get a letter on Monday explaining how much money they owe.
    • Library books need to be returned by Monday or students will not get their report card.
    • Be prepared to bring home assignments, notebooks, binders, and supplies because we will begin the process of cleaning out desks and lockers next week.

There is no homework for the rest of the year. Have a great weekend!

  • Find Your Books

Posted on June 10th, 2010 joemills No comments

I am beginning to collect Math Student Reference Books and Science Textbooks. If these books are at home, students should bring them in immediately. If students do not return their books, they will get a letter on Monday explaining how much they owe. Also, students need to turn in library books. If students have missing library books, they will not be able to get their report card next week.

If students have not turned in their science notebook or their unit 7 test, they need to do that tomorrow.

    Have a great evening!

  • Last Math Homework Assignment

Posted on June 9th, 2010 joemills No comments

The last homework assignment for math is test corrections for the unit 7 test. The test needs to be turned in no later than Monday.

Also, both 5th grade classes are preparing for the class picnic next Wednesday. We ask that students bring in $5 to help purchase food, drinks, and utensils for the picnic. A letter will go home today.

One more announcement for students in 218. Students who are in lunch bunch with Ms. Wofford need to bring in $4 for pizza next Tuesday.

    Have a great evening!

  • Green Screen

Posted on June 8th, 2010 joemills No comments

Just a quick update on social studies. We will be trying to finish our Chicago history videos during the last few days of school. Above, you can see some students using a green screen to record their video. They will act out something in front of the screen and then change the background when they edit the video. It is a very cool process, and the students are learning a lot about the skills needed to create a video.

Also, we had the unit 7 math test today. It will be graded this evening and returned tomorrow.

    Have a great evening!

  • Study for Unit 7 Math Test

Posted on June 7th, 2010 joemills No comments

The homework for math tonight is to study for the unit 7 test. The main concepts for this unit are order of operations and adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers. Tomorrow, students are allowed to use a slide rule or positive and negative counters on the test. They may not use a calculator.

Students needed to turn in their science notebooks today. If they turn it in late, I will not be accepting any notebooks after Friday.

Also, all of the assignments I plan to grade are already listed in Gradebook.

    Have a great evening!

  • Prepare for the Unit 7 Test

Posted on June 4th, 2010 joemills No comments

The students need to complete the unit 7 review for Monday. They were given the review yesterday. Also, the students need to turn in their science notebook on Monday. They do not need to include the last two entries listed on the sheet they were given in class this past Tuesday.

    Have a great weekend!

  • Volunteer Field Trip

Posted on June 3rd, 2010 joemills No comments

We had an excellent time on our field trip today. The students were split into two groups in order to go to two different senior citizen housing facilities. First, the students made breakfast and served breakfast to the tenants. Then, the students played many of rounds of Bingo with the tenants and learned more about their lives by playing a scavenger hunt game. Above, you can see a few pictures from our trip. I am very proud of the work they did today, and I hope they see this as an opportunity to continue the act of service in their community in the future.

The unit 7 review is due on Monday. The students were given it today so they could avoid having homework over the weekend. The unit 7 test is on Tuesday.

    Have a great evening!
