Quicker than I expected, I completed the bottom floor of the previously blogged about house party. This one is dedicated to all of the legendary New York MCs. Maybe not all, but many of them. First, the interior of the room is modeled after the Dixie which was featured in Wild Style. The main rapper is Kurtis Blow. I wanted to use an MC that was considered one of the original popular MCs and he seemed to fit the bill. Also featured (if you can’t figure it out) are Notorious BIG, Chuck D, LL Cool J, Run DMC, Rakim, and KRS One. One of the things I struggled with was properly identifying each MC. Since this poster is not about perfectly drawn portraits, I decided to identify the MCs through classic clothing they wear or through poses. Drawing faces accurately has been something I have done for years, but I resisted the temptation to get every proportion correct. For example, I put LL in his signature red Kangol and white tank top. Or, I put “The Teacher” on KRS One’s jacket and had him speaking to Rakim. To be honest, I’m still not sold on this method, but I’m going to keep forging ahead and see if it feels right.
One small thing I liked about this poster was Biggie selling crack. Since this was a part of his past, I liked being able to include it because it allowed to me reference the rise of crack in the 80’s. As I have mentioned before, this is a celebration of this time period, but I still want to make sure the problems of this era are shown.
