New York Poster – Back in the Days

After a flurry of artwork, I took a little break. Right now, I’m looking to push forward with the New York poster. One of the difficulties I foresee is getting the right feel. I want the poster to have a definite late 1970′s/early 1980′s style. Plus, I want everything to be as authentic as possible. For example, if I’m going to include Times Square, I don’t want it to include current signs. Since I did not grow up at this time and I have never lived in New York, I have to rely on images. One thing that I have been able to find is images of people. The picture above is from a book called Back in the Days by Jamel Shabazz. I have a couple books that have been helpful with the clothing styles of that era. And, I definitely have to have that pose as part of my illustration. Since this poster will be inhabited by many more people, their look is all that more important. Now, if I could just find more pictures of the streets and buildings…

Our Sydney…Messing with the Colors

I had to work on it more. Actually, my wife said that my earlier version looked too “pastelly”. So, I looked at it again…compared it to Chicago 2010…and it definitely looked different. The structures on the Sydney poster did not pop enough. I went back into it and upped the contrast on some of the buildings. Now…it pops. Check out a larger version and details here.

Strawberry Shortcake

Since the Lego poster got so much love at the festivals, I tried my hand at another character in a similar style. Since my wife was a big Strawberry Shortcake fan, I decided to make that my second choice. It has a slightly different look than the Lego man because Strawberry Shortcake is much more detailed. The colors of the character are made up of different cakes and cupcakes. The black outline is made up of strawberries. I’m still trying to decide the best way to arrange the sketches that make up the figure. It needs to be solid enough so you can identify the character, but not so solid so you can not tell what the individual items are. I want there to be a discovery as you get closer to the image and say, “Yes, those are cakes in the figure!”

As it stands right now, I am making recognizable characters. I’d like to do a Muppet next. At some point, I’d like to move past the characters into something more original. For now, the style is original enough…
