A style. It is this elusive concept I have been chasing for a while. Part of me wants to have the freedom to do whatever, but the other part of me wants to cultivate a style. I think I have a compromise…I’m going to cultivate multiple styles. I think it allows me to be versatile while letting the audience know what to expect from me if they see my work. Here is my vision…
1) The Landscape Style
This is definitely my favorite style. It allows me to add a sense of chaos with a sense of structure, and I can do a lot in one compact space. Also, I can see where this is going in the future. I want to create 4 similar landscapes. The first was Chicago. The second is Sydney. Then, I want to switch it up and do New York City in the 1970’s. Actually, it will be heavily hip-hop influenced, but if I was going to do New York City, I wanted it to not be like Sydney and Chicago. Finally, I’m just going to experiment. I expect this to be my signature style.
2) The Sketch Style
Even though this is an “older” style, the response to it last weekend has made me look at it again. I see the possibilities, and I see where it can go. I’m going to start on another figure, Strawberry Shortcake, and then try…something else. I’m not sure yet, but I feel like I need to explore this style. It is unique and versatile.
3) The Comic Book Style
I am not certain where this style will go, but I am not ready to put it away. In some ways, it is a relative of the landscape style, but I can put the focus on one or two things. Plus, it allows me to experiment with textures which I continue to find interesting since they tend to “dirty” the very clean look of a vector illustration.
As a result of this direction, I am going to put together a new logo and reorganize my web site. Let the summer begin…
