Sydney Poster – Opera House

If you would have told me in January that I would be this far with the Sydney poster by the end of May, I would have figured elves worked on it while I slept. Actually, I have been able to do a lot in the evening when I would normally be sleeping. Plus, I have found that doing detailed drawings speeds up the illustration process significantly. Once I sit down at the computer, the placement decisions have already been made for me, so I just need to worry about color. So, I have finished the Opera House. I decided that I did not want to go overboard with trying to shade everything just right. With many of the other buildings, I use a 3-color process…light, medium, and dark. The Opera House is not a flat white, but I think that is the perception. As you can see, I decided to accentuate that perception by making the curved pieces all white and ditch any kind of shading.

Also, I have finished Bondi Beach and I even added my first two people…the sunbather and the surfer. The surfer brought up an interesting design decision. When dealing with water, I can never decide to go really simple or get every droplet. For now, I’m going to stay simple and see how I feel. The cool thing about surfing is how much the water explodes all over. For my surfer, it is not that evident. I’m going to stick with it now, and see how I feel after I have all of the buildings done.

And, you can see that I have decided to do some advertising on the graffiti…I do need to do more of that.

2nd Fridays

I was part of my second 2nd Friday event at N0T0X Toys over the weekend. For this event, I was able to hang some of my posters in the gallery, Chicago 2010, Lego Goes, and Cube Man. The picture above is part of the gallery…my work is right below the big red arrow. I’m once again grateful to Seth over at N0T0X for giving me the opportunity to show my work and help out along the way. It has been a great experience for me. Until next month…

Sydney Poster – The Bottom Half

Over the past week, I have made significant progress on the Sydney poster. On the left, I have completed the MLC Centre, Queen Victoria Building, Anzac Memorial, and…a kangaroo. I have also completed the Governor Phillip Tower (the purple building) and the spiral fountain in Darling Harbour. The poster is definitely building heavy at this point. I’m taking a slightly different approach with this poster. I want to get all of the major sites completed and then, I will add in the people. I plan on having a person or two scaling the Harbour Bridge, some kids playing in the spiral fountain, and people walking into Luna Park. I’m deciding if I want to put some people in “odd” places like sitting on one of the ledges of the Queen Victoria Building or out of the windows in the Chifley Tower. I should probably put a car or two on the bridge as well. I plan on tackling Bondi Beach and then the Sydney Opera House. Never thought I’d be this far by mid-May.
